What Are Military Shelter Systems? Applications and Types
What are military shelter systems, where are they used, and what types exist? A guide to the applications and features of NATO, ACE, ISO and custom-type shelters.

Modern defence operations require secure and protected workspaces in the field. Military shelter systems are transportable cabin solutions designed so that electronic equipment and personnel can operate safely under harsh environmental conditions. In this article we cover what shelters are, where they are used, and which types exist.
What Is a Military Shelter?
A military shelter is a transportable structure that protects sensitive electronic systems, communication devices and operators from threats such as temperature, humidity, dust, vibration, shock and electromagnetic interference. Built to military standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461), these cabins are equipped with subsystems such as climate control, power distribution, lighting and EMI shielding. This allows the critical equipment inside to operate without interruption even in the most demanding field conditions.
Where Are They Used?
Military shelters form the core infrastructure of many mobile and fixed missions:
- Command and control (C2) centres: A secure workspace for field decision-making.
- Radar and electronic warfare systems: Housing sensitive sensor and operator hardware.
- Communication centres: Protecting radio, satellite and data-communication systems.
- Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ground control stations: Flight and mission-management consoles.
- Maintenance and repair workshops: Field-level technical support and calibration.
- Field medical units: Mobile treatment and support spaces.
- Power and support units: Generators, climate control and technical infrastructure.
Types of Shelters
Different shelter types are used depending on the need:
NATO-Type Shelter: Compact, rugged container solutions built to NATO standards. Ideal for the safe transport and rapid deployment of electronic systems.
ACE-Type Shelter: Offers greater internal volume through an expandable structure; suited to multi-operator command and data-processing applications.
ISO-Type Shelter: Built to 20 ft and 40 ft ISO container standards. Enables easy transport, stacking and integration within existing logistics infrastructure; preferred for large system layouts.
Custom-Type Shelters: Solutions designed with mission-specific geometry, size and equipment for non-standard needs.
