Technical Documents
The Modular 36/40mm Multi-Barrel Launcher System is an electrically triggered smoke launcher with a multi-barrel array, designed for main battle tanks (MBTs), armored fighting vehicles (IFVs) and armored personnel carriers. Unlike single-shot systems, its salvo (simultaneous multi-round firing) capability produces a wide, rapidly deployed smoke screen — the most effective countermeasure scenario against ATGM and laser-guided tank round threats in particular.
Why Multi-Barrel Salvo?
For heavy platforms, single-shot smoke munition is insufficient — for physical reasons:
Wide-screen requirement
Large vehicles such as MBTs need a broader smoke cover
Rapid deployment
Full screen must develop within a 2–3 second window; firing multiple rounds simultaneously provides this
Sectoral engagement
Multi-round firing focused on the threat direction avoids resource waste
The modular structure is configured with 4, 8, 12 or more barrels to match the turret geometry, with independent sector-level triggering.
Technical Specifications
- Caliber: 36 mm or 40 mm (depending on variant)
- Barrel count: 4, 8, 12+ (modular configuration)
- Firing: Electrical, sectoral — single, salvo or full array
- Screen deployment time: ~2–4 seconds (in salvo mode)
- Effective range: 20–35 m
- Screen persistence: 45–90 seconds
- Power: 28V DC (MIL-STD-1275F compliant)
- Environmental: MIL-STD-810H
- EMC: MIL-STD-461G
- Control: Manual console + vehicle BMS integration
- Munition: Multi-spectrum (visible + IR + thermal + optional mm-wave)
Countermeasure Chain Integration
The system is positioned not standalone, but as part of the vehicle-level defence chain:
1. Vehicle-Mounted Laser Warning System detects enemy laser illumination 2. Threat bearing is determined by sector 3. The launcher fires a salvo from the barrels in that sector 4. A wide smoke screen deploys within 2–4 seconds 5. The vehicle changes maneuver position and swings the counter-turret onto target
This chain turns the few-second window between an ATGM's laser guidance pulse and impact time into an advantage for the vehicle.
Applications
- Main battle tanks (MBTs)
- Armored fighting vehicles (IFVs)
- Armored personnel carriers (APCs)
- Heavy wheeled armored vehicles (8x8 platforms)
- Armored command and control platforms
Modernization and Retrofit
The system is offered as both an integrated solution in new tank/IFV programs and as a retrofit in modernization packages for existing inventory. It has been successfully integrated into armored vehicle families of the Turkish Armed Forces and friendly nations.
